Pay heed to the public
Published: November 18, 2008 5:00 PMIt’s all over now except for the back-slapping and the tongue-lashings. The people of Sooke rose up, got out of bed and made it to the polls to vote for, what I suspect, is change.
This election was a relatively clean affair, although some thought it would be a nasty one. Of course it had its moments of discord, but in the end, people voted in some old hands and some new ones. Voters have long memories and they do look back on the records of those who serve and make their opinions heard on the ballot sheet when they weren’t heard in council chambers. A new perspective will likely go a long way toward strengthening council and thus Sooke.
Our hats are off to all who ran for council. It is not an easy job and those who now hold the reins will likely experience some bumpy rides. If they can try to get along, respect each other’s opinions without acrimony and do the job they were elected to do, Sooke will do fine. Being on council is not a popularity contest, it is a tough job with many long hours away from home and family. Thanks to Councillors Armour, Parkinson, Kasper and Smith for the three years they gave to the people of Sooke. They deserve a rest.
If we can do anything for the new council, it would be to ensure they have all the information they need to make responsible decisions which serve all of the people.
And if the past is any indication, they have a lot of voices to listen to. It would be wise for the council to pay heed to what people are saying through their letters, e-mails,phone calls and on the streets. It is the people who voted them in and it will be the people who keep them there.
