Prevent theft — ensure your vehicle is always locked
Published: December 02, 2008 5:00 PMThere were 98 calls for service between November 24-30. To date there have been 5,533 calls for service to the Sooke RCMP.
Commencing on Monday Dec. 1, criminal record check applications can be dropped off at the Sooke RCMP detachment office Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Processing time will be two weeks. If there is a fee involved, it will need to be prepaid before the application will be processed. If the applicant is volunteering, there needs to be a letter (on letter head) attached stating this, and the applicants name must appear on the letter .
As we head into the holiday season, thefts from motor vehicles will begin to increase. Please ensure the doors to your vehicle are locked, leave nothing in view, and take your valuables with you. If you are also planning to be away from your residence, ensure your property is checked regularly by a property reference. Finally, report suspicious activities in your neighbourhoods.
November 24
— The RCMP were called to the 2800 block of Otter Point Road. The driver of a vehicle was traveling too fast for road conditions and lost control of the vehicle. The driver drove into a cement barrier and was charged with Speed Relative to Road Conditions. There were no injuries and some minor damage to the vehicle.
While conducting traffic control at the accident scene, a member observed a truck pull up with marijuana smoke exhausting from the open driver’s side window. The driver admitted to freshly consuming while driving. He was suspended for 24 hours and his vehicle was impounded.
— An individual reported his residence located in the 2700 block of Seaside Drive was broken into between 8 a.m. and 9:45 p.m. The front door had been jimmied and the door’s window was smashed. A computer monitor and hard drive, video camera, stereo equipment and cash were stolen. The investigation is continuing.
November 25
— A member on patrol in the 5400 block of Sooke Road observed an SUV traveling at 80km/hr in a posted 60km/hr zone. The driver identified himself and had an odour of liquor on his breath. The ASD was administered resulting in a 24-hour driving prohibition. The individual did not have a valid driver’s licence and was a Vehicle Impound candidate. The vehicle was impounded and the driver was issued a violation ticket for driving without consideration.
— A report was received of a vehicle in the ditch on Becher Bay and East Sooke Roads. The members attended and the vehicle was located. A male was still in the driver’s seat and was noted to have gross signs of intoxication. The individual was arrested but fled from the police on foot. He was apprehended quickly due to his level of intoxication. The driver was taken back to the detachment where he provided two breath samples. Both samples were well over the legal limit. He was later released on a Promise to Appear for court. He was issued an ADP and his vehicle was towed.
November 26
— A detachment auxiliary member making his way home reported he was behind a vehicle that was swerving. The vehicle was located and stopped as it turned into a driveway on West Coast Road. The driver let out a passenger and continued on around the house. The driver stopped and the investigating officer noted signs of impairment. The driver provided a sample of breath into the ASD which resulted in a “FAIL” reading. The driver was arrested for impaired driving. At the detachment he provided two samples of breath that were over the legal limit. He was later released on PTA for court. An ADP and 24-hour suspension were also issued.
November 27
— A report of a theft from a motor vehicle in the 6500 block of Stonewood Drive was received. The complainant stated that when he went to his vehicle that morning, he noticed some items had been stolen from the locked vehicle. The vehicle was parked on the street in front of his residence between 10:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. Items stolen were a TomTom navigation system, coins, cds and dvds.
— The RCMP were called by the Shirley Fire Department to assist at a fire on Trailhead Drive. The 24-foot camper trailer had been completely destroyed by fire prior to police attendance. The source of the fire was not known, but it was believed to have started at the rear near the extension cord. The trailer was valued at $7,500 with $2,500 in contents (kayak and surf-board).
— An individual reported that sometime on November 25, unknown person(s) set off the alarm at her summer residence on Becher Road. On attendance, the owner had found her shed had been entered, but nothing appeared to be missing. She added that when the alarm company responded to the alarm, they had checked the house, but not the shed. Therefore the break-in was not detected until two days later.
November 28
— An individual reported that between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. someone had broken into a secure storage area attached to his carport on Seagirt Road. A safe was stolen containing a passport, Canadian permanent residency card, and son’s passport. Firewood was also taken.
November 29
— The RCMP were called to a residence on Sooke Road. An individual in the residence was swinging an axe at some other males and threatening to kill them. Police attended and immediately arrested a male. The male was later released on a PTA and Undertaking for court. The investigation is continuing.
— A roadblock (checkstop program) was set up at Sooke and Kaltasin Roads. Approximately 100 vehicles were checked. This resulted in one impaired driver, two 24-hour prohibitions, VT for driving without consideration, no driver’s licence, and two notice and orders.
— An individual reported there was someone parked in a vehicle in the parking lot of 2049 Kaltasin Road with music blaring. Members attended and found a vehicle parked in the lot with the driver seated in the driver’s seat with keys in the ignition. Indications of impairment were observed by the investigating officer. The breath demand was requested and the male was detained for an impaired investigation. The male was escorted back to the detachment where he provided two suitable breath samples. The samples were well over the legal limit. A PTA, ADP, 24-hour prohibition, and notice to seek greater punishment were served.
