Cast and crew ready to Howl!

Monsters Abound! Hollywood is turning out vampire movies, little Draculas roamed the streets at Halloween, and now Sooke Community Theatre is being taken over by werewolves!

Whatever next? Well, next is a brilliant original musical, called Howl, written and composed by local musician Thom Southwood. With Thom as musical director, Sam Pasta as stage director, and Scarlette Downey as choreographer, this Stage West Players’ production opens this week, November 6 in Sooke with three sets of weekend performances, Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m. and Sunday 2 p.m. matinees repeated until November 22. See the Ad for more details.

The plot and main characters are simple: modest hero, courageous heroine, her caring father, a comic dancing duo, and the most charming villain since Shakespeare’s Richard III.

But the meat of the show belongs to the chorus, two mixed teams of good guys and bad guys, werewolves all. It seems that a werewolf is a normal person until the full moon every month when he/she goes wild with cannibalistic desires. These wild scenes are a choreographer’s dream! By turns it’s scary, it’s sexy, it’s hilarious, it’s everything. A well-trained cast, bursting with energy are creating a howling success.

This is indeed a musical with catchy songs and dancing, and some very dramatic scenes and battles. There are bright costumes and wonderful sound, lighting, and special effects.

This very “mod,” original, and unusual show will attract all the young crowd, but surprisingly, retired “oldies” like me will find themselves tapping their feet, laughing uproariously, and cheering the good guys over the baddies.

Be warned, this show is suitable only for audiences between 10 and 100. No, it is not gruesome, just daring, delightful, dramatic, and deserving of your presence.

Come and watch these cannibals cavorting – you’ll eat it up.
