A&E: Youth are focus of philharmonic concert

The Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra’s first concert of the 2009-2010 Season is the sixth annual edition of “A  Celebration of Young Artists.”

The program will feature the very talented young cello soloist, Rylan Gajek, winner of the Sooke Philharmonic’s 2009 Don Chrysler Concerto Competition for Young Musicians.

Sixteen-year-old cellist Rylan Gajek was born in Red Deer, Alberta, and began studying the cello when he was six.

Rylan is a member of the Victoria Conservatory of Music and maintains a consistent drive to push his creative limits as a cellist and composer.

The orchestra will be joined by about 12 string musicians from the Victoria School District No. 61 Festival Orchestra. This marks the sixth year the SPO has given some of the best musicians in the strings program the opportunity to play with a semi-professional community orchestra.

The concertmaster for this concert will be Bobby Li, a very talented young violinist.

The Sooke Philharmonic Society will again be donating a portion from each ticket sold from the Sooke Concert to Sooke School District No. 62 to support their music program at Journey Middle School. The same applies to the Victoria Concert from which a donation will be made to Victoria School District No. 61, to support their music programs.

This initiative allows us to continue our mandate to support young musicians as well as demonstrate our support for the Coalition for Music Education in Canada. The more people in the seats for these concerts, the more they will be able to support these music programs.

On Friday, Oct. 30, the concert takes place at the Sooke Community Theatre, at 8 p.m. and on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 2:30 p.m., in Victoria at the Alix Goolden Hall.

Rylan Gajek will be performing Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1, Op.33 in A minor. Also on the program: Dvorak, Slavonic Dances, Op.46 and Sibelius, Symphony No. 2, Op.43 in D major.

Tickets are available in Sooke at Shoppers Drug Mart, South Shore Gallery, Wood Travel, and the box office at EMCS as well as at the door for both venues.

Concert-goers can still purchase season tickets and enjoy savings and a chance to win a gift certificate for a four-hour whale watching experience for two, courtesy of Sooke Coastal Explorations. Details are in the 2009-2010 Season Brochure, or call 250-642-2849 or site at www.sookephil.ca.

The draw will take place at the November 1 concert in Victoria.
