On Saturday, October 31, the Sooke Folk Music Society will proudly present yet another in its concert series performances, featuring West Coast artists, David Essig and Rick Scott.
Each an acclaimed solo performer, David Essig and Rick Scott combine guitar, dulcimer and vocal harmonies in finely crafted songs of life, love and loss seasoned with literate wit and considerable kindness. This is roots music with one foot on the mountain and the other foot in the swamp, with influences of blues, bluegrass, R&B and ole time country.
Essig and Scott bring to the stage a wealth of experience from lives fully lived and careers that have earned them devoted followings around the world. After crossing paths on folk festival main stages for over 35 years, they now live 500 metres apart on tiny Protection Island in Nanaimo where they recorded their first collaboration together, Double Vision, at Essig’s home Watershed studio.
David Essig is considered one of Canada’s finest interpreters of original, contemporary folk music. Always paying homage to his roots in bluegrass and country blues, he uses these traditions to create new songs both timely and timeless. A renowned producer/engineer, he has produced 70 albums. He played 18 instruments on Double Vision.
Rick Scott is dulcimer wizard and lead singer of legendary BC folk trio Pied Pumkin and an internationally acclaimed actor and family entertainer. His 18 albums include seven children’s CDs which have earned countless kudos including three Juno nominations and a Canadian Folk Music Award.
“His gift for enriching and healing the human spirit will not soon be forgotten” (Rogue Folk Review).
Please join us for an inspiring evening of warm and insightful music by these two gifted artists. It all takes place Saturday, Oct. 31 at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 1962 Murray Road. Doors open at 7:30 and the show starts at 8 p.m. Admission is $15. It’s Halloween, feel free to wear a costume.
