On Saturday, November 29 and Sunday, November 30, Sooke’s Ekoos vocal emsemble will be presenting two evenings of Advent music.
The first performance takes place at Holy Trinity Anglican Church on November 29 at 7:30 p.m. with another performance November 30 at Old St. Mary’s Church in Metchosin, at 2:30 p.m.
Ekoos Vocal Ensemble will welcome the Advent season with “A Ceremony of Carols” by Benjamin Britten, plus seasonal works by Praetorius, Giffen, Howells, Palestrina and others.
Ekoos also welcomes new members for the spring 2009 season, especially sopranos and tenors! Please come to our concert, visit our website at: http://members.shaw.ca/ekooschoir, or contact conductor Wade Noble for information and a brief informal audition.
The Ekoos Vocal Ensemble consists of a group of 15 singers who enjoy performing a wide variety of music from Renaissance motets and madrigals, through the Baroque to the modern.
The origins of Ekoos go back to another small choral group, “Musicke of Sundrie Kindes,” which began about 1975 and continued until 1991 when it joined with the Sooke Community Choir. In 1994, some former members of “Sundrie Kindes” decided to go back to the small, a cappella format and joined with other interested singers to create a chamber choir under the leadership of Rev. Ken Gray.
The first performance by Ekoos was at Sooke’s Holy Trinity Church in June 1994. Other directors since then have included David Clenman, Michael Peter, Christopher Symons and Cassandra Miller, each of whom brought his/her own personal style, and varied repertoire, to the group.
Ekoos now works under the direction of Wade Noble, who is a well-known choral director and baritone soloist in British Columbia. Wade has completed two music degrees and has earned a reputation as an intelligent and sensitive musician. The ensemble is enjoying working under his enthusiastic leadership and skillful teaching of new and challenging pieces.
Ekoos Vocal Ensemble is grateful for financial contributions from the West Coast Community Development Association and The West Shore Arts Council.
Tickets are available at the Reading Room Bookstore (Evergreen Centre) and at the door.
