Sooke Hospice has received a generous bequest from the Estate of John Oliver of Metchosin. Initially the gift was a mystery. No one remembered the deceased. The mystery was cleared up when a Victoria lawyer presented the Sooke Hospice board with a cheque.

The lawyer told us the story of his in-laws, Gladys and Ches Padgett (Padge) who had received wonderful care from Sooke Hospice. Sooke Hospice assisted Padge who died of congestive heart failure in 2001. At that time Gladys moved from Manzer Road to the Sandpiper. She was diagnosed with cancer. The family contacted the Sooke Hospice Society. Gladys was provided with a hospital bed and respite help until she died in 2002, six months after Padge. The lawyer and his wife and family were impressed with the care and kindness Sooke Hospice had given the family.

Several months later John Oliver wanted to make a will leaving his estate to worthwhile charities. The lawyer told Oliver the story of Sooke Hospice and the care given to his in-laws. John Oliver left a large part of his estate to four charities, one of which was Sooke Hospice.

Thank you to the volunteers who helped the Padgetts. Your kindness has come back to benefit future clients..
