Alumni FC loses 3-2 heart-breaker
Vantrieghts outperform Alumni in a physical, fast-paced game.
Players on Salt Spring’s Alumni FC will have to wait at least another week for a win after losing a closely fought weekend match against Vantreights.
Alumni FC nearly clawed its way back from a three-goal deficit in the dying moments of Sunday’s game thanks to multiple corner kicks and unrelenting pressure from the team’s forwards.
Player Colin Walde said the team suffered from yet another late start, finding itself outmatched and outscored through the game’s opening half.
Thanks to two goals from Walde early in the second half, Alumni FC gave home-town fans gathered around the soggy and cool high school field plenty to cheer about.
“We were just all over them,” he said.
Vantreights’ keeper held up to the onslaught of Alumni FC shots and preserved the 3-2 victory.
The team’s next game is against Gorge (3-1-3) at the high school field on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 10:30 a.m.
In other soccer news, the Salt Spring Old Boys were shut out 3-0 in their match against Bays United FC on Sunday afternoon.
Bays United offered few scoring opportunities as the team defended its hold atop the Vancouver Island Soccer League’s Masters-C division. The loss drops the Old Boys into fifth place with a 1-4 record.
The team’s next home game is on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 10:30 a.m.
