Gremio team set for four-game homestand
Their spirits quashed by an early Cowichan goal, players from Salt Spring FC dropped their second game in as many weeks.
“A lot of stuff just didn’t go our way,” said player Jordon Morrison. “We got frustrated early and got knocked off our game.”
Salt Spring made things interesting midway through the first half when Leroy Coombs fired a “brilliantly placed shot into the top corner of the net,” Morrison said.
Teams played a steady back-and-forth game for most of the second half until Cowichan got a break and scored the game winner off a dramatic header with 10 minutes to play.
Cowichan (2-3-1) withstood a late surge to hand Salt Spring its second loss of the season.
Morrison said it’s only a matter of time before his team “bounces back” and sets off on a winning streak of its own.
The team is still in sole possession of first place in the Vancouver Island Soccer League’s second division.
“We’re in a bit of a slump, but we’re happy where we are,” he said.
FC’s next game is at Portlock Park on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2:15 p.m. against fifth-place FC Sagres (2-2-1).
In other Salt Spring soccer news, Ganges Gremio tied second-place Vantreights 2-2.
Goal scorers were Colin McDougall and Tony Graham.
McDougall’s goal extends his current goal-scoring streak to six games.
The tie gives Gremio a firm grip on fourth place in the league’s 4C division with 10 points.
Gremio hosts its next four matches at Portlock Park. The team’s next game is against Juan de Fuca (1-5-1) on Sunday at 2:15 p.m.
