Salt Spring FC continued its early season success over the weekend with a 3-0 victory over the Prospect Lake Lakers.

FC players got off to a slow start, relying on some outstanding saves by keeper Miguel Alvarado to keep them in the game.

“We could have been down 2-0 early,” said player and team spokesperson Jordon Morrison.

The shutout was Alvarado’s second of the season. The FC keeper has allowed only one goal in three games.

A penalty kick awarded to Leroy Coombs 25 minutes into the half gave FC a 1-0 lead.

Consistent pressure in the Lakers’ end helped set up Gord Akerman for FC’s second goal just before the break.

Christopher Jason scored the game’s third and final goal midway through the second as FC maintained unrelenting control of the play.

“That was all we needed,” Morrison said. “We didn’t really need to press after that.”

The win gives FC a 2-0-1 record and sole possession of second place in the Vancouver Island Soccer League’s second division. FC is only two points behind the first-place Gordon Head Blazers.

FC tied Prospect Lake in the teams’ two matches last season.

“They’re an alright team,” Morrison said.

FC’s next game is at Portlock Park against Powell River Villa (1-2-0) on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m.
