Park upgrades underway for disc golfers and walkers

A $2,100 grant-in-aid from the island’s Parks and Recreation Commission means the disc golf course at Mouat Park is about to get a major overhaul.
A new course map, improved trails, bridges and upgraded tee pads are just part of the work scheduled to occur over the next few weeks, said island disc golfer Gordon Field.
Improved signage is hoped to minimize conflict between disc golfers and other park users.
Rule number one is to respect and share the park, Field said.
“We’re bringing in signage to the park, both for disc golfers and park users alike,” he added. “Signs will be made to warn people of flying discs and blind fairways.”
The Hart Memorial Disc Golf Course, among the region’s oldest, is considered one of the most challenging and scenic small courses on the coast.
Preserving the park’s natural environment and treating other park users with respect is necessary for continued success of both the sport and the facility, Field added.
News of the upgrades precedes Saturday’s Island Summer Series Disc Golf Tournament.
The July 4 event is the fourth of eight tournaments held in the Vancouver Island region over the summer.
Field said he anticipates a strong contingent of off-island players and home-grown disc golfers at the event. Participants will play two rounds of 18 at the day-long competition.
Registration in any of 10 categories covering all levels of play for both men and women begins July 4 at 10 a.m. A players’ meeting takes place at 10:45 a.m. with tee-off set for 11 a.m.
Field thanked Slegg Lumber, Windsor Plywood, The Rental Stop, Key Pawn Trucking, Jason Fraser, Uptown Pizza and the many other volunteers who made the upgrades and tournament possible.
