Marina Holding achieves her goal

Salt Spring rider Marina Holding and her horse Reilly will be part of the regional equestrian team heading to the B.C. Summer Games in Kelowna.

The group representing all of Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and central B.C. coast areas will consist of two jumpers, two dressage riders and one reiner. Holding, 15, will compete as a show jumper in the height class of three feet, six inches.

“With only five riders going to the games in this region, it is a huge accomplishment to qualify for the team,” states a press release.

The B.C. Summer Games event offers the only competition of this kind provincially and it only comes along every two years.

In regional competition, riders compete against all levels of experience, including adults.

Living on Salt Spring also offers extra challenges not faced by other riders.

“Holding set her goal last year to try and qualify for the team and has been totally committed to this goal, working incredibly hard.

“It is also important to note that without the help and support from her great coach Jacky Cooper and the successful pairing with her talented little horse Reilly, a seven-year-old Connemara, this would not have been possible.”

The 2008 B.C. Summer Games run from July 24-27 in Kelowna.
