Many of us are aware that the union contract for the Salt Spring Island Fire/Rescue service includes provision for exercise facilities for the permanent firefighters there.
With this in mind, I was most interested to see the Request for Tenders in the Oct. 7 Driftwood, which calls for “persons to maintain the landscaping of the fire department’s three fire halls” for 2010. As someone who supports the need for both fiscal and physical fitness, I wondered if perhaps both goals could be advanced by including lawn mowers and gardening equipment amongst the exercise facilities, and having the firefighters get some of their exercise between emergency calls by maintaining the landscaping of the fire halls.
