Letter - Being happy

Further to my Sept. 9 letter (“Mysteries”), a thoughtful neighbour pointed out to me that we actually do have lions on Salt Spring Island (they have a hall in Ganges), and that while the deer population here does threaten many a local garden, we have no need for tigers.

Hmmm, well, anyway, that brings me back to the topic of nature and human civilization.

Science is based on “natural philosophy,” the study of nature. And what do we really know about nature?

Obviously, nature is life. It’s complex, diverse and rather exciting. I like to sit in front of my PC and search the cyber-universe for new ideas and products. I could go for a kayak ride or pick wild mushrooms, but I’m quite happy with a cup of coffee and Facebook.

Don’t worry, I tell myself, be happy!

Peter Ramsey,

Salt Spring
