Coffee compromise suggested

Why the confrontation? Why not constructive compromise? The Salt Spring Coffee Company wants to continue and expand its business on the island. Our island’s trustees have an obligation — in good faith — to honour and enforce the Trust’s mandate: “to preserve and protect.” Therefore, rezoning “residential rural” to “industrial” is in obvious conflict with this mandate.

So, what can be done? In a spirit of constructive compromise SSCC and the Trust could work together to identify available industrial land located within the public water system that can be rezoned for mixed usage: coffee production, greenhouse agriculture, and educational purposes. This teamwork approach just might prove to be a win-win situation. We would then be able to “preserve and protect” our precious island’s eco-system while providing business and employment opportunities to Salt Spring residents.Sounds too simple to be true? Let’s try it.
