Expand market to street

Last week in the paper we were told that thank goodness everyone behaved themselves at the market and only “some of the 20 new vendors” went without space and they didn’t do the unthinkable by moving onto the grass.

My take on that story is that up to 20 young artists were left again without a way to make a living by participating in our world-famous market. I think this is a sad and sorry state of affairs. Why can’t we (Parks and Rec) think beyond the box? Things as they stand are not right.

By blocking off the street from CIBC to the fire hall we could almost double the market space, we’d only lose eight parking spots and it would make our world-famous market much more accessible to everyone. We might even get more locals coming.

There are lots of towns that block streets for special events, why don’t we? Access to the harbour would still be available through the Thrifty’s loop and the fire hall has access from its Lower Ganges Road exit. It’s a “no brainer” to me. Let’s get with it. It isn’t right or fair to not allow every artist a chance for a space in our Salt Spring market.
