I need to thank Christine Torgrimson for her recent decision to not support the rezoning application by the Salt Spring Coffee company.
We all have seen the sprawl in most North American communities and, despite the fact many people hate it, it is so hard to stop. The Islands Trust, with your help, is the only thing saving us from this same fate. I fear this is just the latest battle against this process. But with this vote you are helping to preserve the great beauty of our island that most of us hope to pass on to future generations.
The benefits of future industrial development to adding jobs to our community must be considered side-by-side with the impact on the owners and residents of neighboring properties. The coffee company is asking for a clear guideline for Islands Trust approval of rezoning applications. I would suggest that without strong support by nearby property owners no rezoning application should be approved.
