Island gets national spotlight in Song Quest contest
Salt Spring Island is among five British Columbia communities in the running to become immortalized in song as part of the Great Canadian Song Quest radio contest.
Vancouver, Tofino, Barkerville, the Okanagan Valley and Salt Spring are the five finalists vying to represent the province on a national 13-track compilation.
The B.C. towns and cities are up there with such iconic Canadian locales as Love, SK, Flin Flon, MB, Alert, NU, Old Crow, YK and Dildo, NF.
Voters have until Friday, Oct. 23 to choose from a shortlist of places from each province and territory.
Voters are also being asked to select the artists they’d like to see create the song for each location.
British Columbian artists include Barney Bentall, Oh Susanna, Alex Cuba, Ndidi Onukwulu and Salt Spring resident Harry Manx.
Votes can be registered online at www.cbc.ca/radio2.
Once voting wraps up, 13 winning artists will get four weeks to compose and record an original song, inspired by the most popular Canadian location from their province or territory.
“We can’t wait to see the final list of locations and artists chosen by Canadians,” said Mark Steinmetz, director of music programming for CBC Radio, in a press release issued on Monday. “By inspiring these artists with Canada’s special locales, we will create a distinctly Canadian playlist. This initiative is a great way for Canadians to share their collective passion for music and our country.”
The shortlist of locations is a result of nominations submitted by Canadians over the past two weeks, through the website, campaign-style blogs, Tweets and Facebook comments, and photo and video postings.
More information on how to vote and spread the word about your community is available on the CBC Radio 2 website.
The end results will be released on Nov. 23.
