Juno nominees take kids show to islands

Three Gulf Islands get a visit from The Kerplunks as part of the children’s entertainers’ upcoming tour.

The Gabriola-based group has received various honours, including being the winner of the 2008 Canadian Folk Music Award for Children’s Album of the Year, and a 2009 Juno Award nomination. More importantly, the group plays catchy and energetic tunes that are guaranteed to get kids engaged, press material states.

They perform on Salt Spring at Mahon Hall on Friday, Oct. 2 at 6 p.m., on Pender Island at the Anglican Hall on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. and at the South Galiano Community Hall on Galiano Island on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m.

Led by Dinah D and Tina Jones, The Keplunks have been called “Canada’s hippest children’s entertainers.”

Their music has its roots in the duo’s popular preschool program on Gabriola Island, which led to the recording of their multi-award-winning first album. The Kerplunks have lately been busy playing some of Canada’s finest music festivals and touring schools.

For the Islands Tour, Dinah D and Tina Jones are joined by their friends Phil Wipper and Aaron Cadwaladr, making The Kerplunks a four-piece live band. Between the four musicians, over a dozen instruments are played.

“Dinah plays the upright bass, banjo and really belts it out. She also plays the kazoo like a mad-woman. Tina plays the trumpet, trombone, clarinet, baritone and also sings. Watch out for when she busts a rhyme, yo! Phil plays the drums and sings along. Aaron plays the acoustic guitar, makes great faces and also sings along.”

Families who’ve seen the group have said: “We loved the way that music, movement and musical instruments were introduced to the children . . . remarkable, energetic!”

The Kerplunks are committed to educating kids through musical creativity and pursuing a career in music.

Tickets are $10 each or three for $25.

Salt Spring show tickets are at Fables Cottage Bookstore, Pender tickets are at Talisman Books and Galiano Island Books is handling sales on Galiano.
