Originally scheduled for Saskatchewan, a late venue change for the 2008 national senior master’s soccer championships will see the event happen this weekend around Victoria.
Representing B.C. on the over-30 women’s side are Victoria’s Gorge FC and the Vancouver’s Meralomas. Other teams are EDO United from Quebec and Rexdale Reunited from Ontario.
B.C. champion UVic Alumni is in tough on the over-35 men’s side against the Calgary Callies, Saskatoon Arsenal and AC Italia of Manitoba.
The finals go Monday at Royal Athletic Park with the women’s game at 9:30 and the men at 11:30 a.m. Full schedule details follow on page A33.
Hennick leads Chargers golfers
A third-place finish at the last of four B.C. Colleges Athletics Association golf tournaments gave the Camosun Chargers men fourth place overall for the 2008 season.
First-year Charger Matt Hennick topped the individual standings for Camosun, placing eighth with a four-tournament stroke total of 593.
Vikes women defeat Bisons in Winnipeg
The University of Victoria Vikes women’s soccer team strengthened their grip on top spot in the Canada West with a 1-0 victory over the No. 5-ranked Manitoba Bisons Sunday. Rookie Stephanie Parker posted her third straight shutout to extend the Vikes’ undefeated streak to seven games.
The seventh-ranked Vikes improved to 7-2-1 and hold a three-point lead over second-place UBC heading into this weekend’s home games at Centennial Stadium against Trinity Western (Sat.) and Fraser Valley (Sun.), both starting at noon.
