It was the Mt. Doug Rams over the Belmont Bulldogs in senior girls volleyball on the weekend. It’s a scenario Rams’ coach Brian McKinnon expects to see all year.

The Rams defeated Belmont 25-13; 14-25; 17-15 in the final of the Camosun Chargers Fall Classic senior girls volleyball tournament at the Pacific Institute for Sports Excellence.

“It was the opening tournament of the year to see where everybody’s at,” said McKinnon, who was happy with his team’s first place finish. McKinnon has coached the group for five years, dating back to its inception at Arbutus Middle School as a mix of Gr. 6’ and 7’s.

The field of competition will be tougher for the Rams and other teams visiting this weekend’s annual U.B.C. High School tournament, with over 50 teams expected.

The Rams swept their pool against Victor Brodeur, Oak Bay and Stelly’s, setting up a semifinal win over Lambrick Park, 25-18, 25-19.

Belmont knocked off tournament favourites Mark Isfeld in the other semis, setting up the three set final.

McKinnon expects Belmont, Dover Bay, and Francis Kelsey among the AAAA teams to beat this season. Both the Chargers tourney and upcoming UBC tourney are open to any size of school.

Lower Vancouver Island High School Sports Association league play begins Tuesday, Sept. 29.
