EDITORIAL: Time for others to step up

Much as some people might like to believe, housing the homeless isn’t as simple as government throwing a bunch of money at the situation and constructing or converting structures into low-income housing.

At a time when provincial and federal budget deficits seem to be growing by the day, we can’t rely on government alone to solve our area’s homelessness woes.

The example set by Saanich-based David Burr and his property management company is one we hope more companies that oversee rental space will pick up on. As part of a joint arrangement with service provider Pacifica Housing Advisory Association, Burr has set aside suites in two his buildings specifically for people moving off the street.

Granted, that’s just two out of an estimated 1,500 homeless out there right now. The point is, the gesture shows a willingness to be part of the solution, instead of expecting someone else to take care of it, then complaining when the pace of progress appears too slow.

People often grouse when their neighbourhood is considered for an initiative aimed at providing better services for homeless individuals, those at risk of homelessness, or those battling addictions or mental illness – scenarios that often go together.

Expecting people to welcome such facilities with open arms is probably a stretch, but they should be able to accept people into their neighbourhood in ones or twos or threes.

Pacifica, in this case, is providing all the supports necessary to help ensure their clients receive a hand up in rebuilding their lives – and those living nearby have a number to call if there are problems.

As a member of the greater community, Burr has stepped forward and taken a little responsibility for solving what was identified as a key issue by a majority of politicians running in last fall’s core-area municipal elections.

We’d like to see more people with the means to help choose to take that bold step.
