Orcherton top vote-getter in school trustee election

Whether it was name recognition or simply a solid platform, incumbents were the top seven vote-getters in the Greater Victoria School District election Saturday.

Two-term trustee Peg Orcherton topped the polls with 16,628 votes, more than 1,000 ahead of 21-year trustee Bev Horsman in second spot.

Following in order were incumbents Elaine Leonard (14,493), John Young (13,048), Jim Holland (12.303), Michael McEvoy (12,147) and current board chair Tom Ferris (11,891).

The newcomers to the board are former high school principal David Pitre, who placed eighth with 11,145 votes, and Sooke middle school teacher Catherine Alpha (10,828), the lone candidate sponsored by the Victoria Public Education Coalition to be elected.

Trustee and recent board vice-chair Mark Walsh was the only incumbent to be defeated, falling short of Alpha's total by 489 votes.
