A team of students from the University of Victoria won multiple awards in a contest to build a more efficient car.

The EcoCAR challenge pits 14 U.S. and three Canadian teams against each other in a three-year contest. Challengers try to convert a 2009 Saturn VUE into a hybrid, fuel cell or electric vehicle. The University of Victoria team’s design runs on electric power and E85 ethanol.

The awards ceremony for the first year of the challenge was held in Toronto on June 12.

“The highlight of the trip was seeing all of our team members pull together and deliver a great team effort,” said Victoria’s EcoCAR team member Jeremy Wise.

The Victoria team won a total of seven awards, coming in second place overall. On Aug. 1 they will receive a VUE donated by General Motors to implement their design.
