Police chose to avoid a potentially-dangerous, high-speed chase Sunday morning.

The incident started when a Saanich officer spotted a minivan running a red light at the intersection of Tillicum Road and Regina Avenue.

The cop managed to pull the driver over, but, when the officer got out of his car, the minivan sped off.

The officer returned to his car and learned the van had been stolen out of the Lower Mainland earlier this month.

The stolen vehicle was spotted by another officer, but police did not engage in pursuit because of the risk it posed to other traffic. The vehicle was last seen travelling along the Trans-Canada Highway towards the West Shore.

The van is a 1993 blue Mazda MPV with a B.C. licence plate, 043-PDH.

The driver is described as a 20- to 30-year-old male with brown hair.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 250-475-4321 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
