After getting off the school bus, around 4 p.m., Friday, a 12-year-old girl was followed by a suspicious man in a car.

The incident occurred in the area along Tattersall Drive near Salsbury Way, as the girl was walking the rest of the way home.

As she passed Salsbury Way, a man driving a red older model four-door car pulled in behind her and slowly followed her as she continued down Tattersall Drive.

When the girl turned on to a side street, she waved at a neighbour and the suspicious man sped off in his car.

The 12-year-old girl described the man as "creepy", with squinty eyes and pale sallow skin. He looked to be between 30 and 35 years old, approximately 5'7" tall, with a thin build and partial beard.

The car had an "N" (novice driver) magnet on the back.

"The young girl's action's are commended by the Saanich Police," said Sgt. Julie Fast. "By waving at a neighbour, she sent the message to anyone around her that other people were watching and (were) able to help her if needed. This may have discouraged the man from following her further."

The girl also told her parents about the incident, who then called police.
