Saanich police are looking for a thief who broke into a house late Thursday morning, while two individuals were home, and stole a laptop computer and several pieces of jewelry.

The break and enter occurred around 11:30 a.m. at a home in the 700 block of Haliburton Road. Police weren't called until the homeowners returned to their house in the evening.

At the time of the incident, the couple's 20-year-old son and a 23-year-old tenant were home. The son was asleep and the tenant was awake in his bedroom.

The thief entered the home through a basement window. He made his way to the master bedroom where he stole jewelry and a Compaq laptop.

The tenant was alerted to the sounds of voices in the hallway and then his bedroom door was opened.

He saw an unknown man look in on him, and then step away and shut the door without saying anything.

The 23-year-old initially thought the man was a friend of the homeowners' son, but he went to investigate anyway.

He found the basement door unlocked and saw the suspicious man riding a bicycle out of the driveway.

The tenant searched the home, but did not find anything out of place so he didn't call police. Saanich police weren't called until the end of the day, when the homeowners returned and discovered items missing.

The suspect is described as a clean-shaven Caucasian man in his mid to late 20s, approximately 6'3" to 6'5" tall. He wore a grey zip-up hoodie, a red T-shirt with black writing on the front, faded blue jeans, a white hat with a black design on the front, and designer glasses.

He left the home on a ten-speed bicycle, described as being light in colour.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Saanich police at 250-475-4321, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
