Car passenger opens door into oncoming cyclist

Police are reminding travellers about the rules of the road after a cyclist was injured last week when a car door opened suddenly.
Around 5 p.m., Thursday, a woman riding her bike southbound on Blanshard Street toward Cloverdale Avenue struck the passenger door of a car when it unexpectedly opened in the middle of the road.
The cyclist had slowed down for a red light at the intersection and resumed her speed as the light turned green. Ahead of her was a car that had also stopped for the red light.
As the cyclist passed, a passenger in the front seat of the vehicle opened the door to get out. The cyclist had no time to stop and she struck the open door.
The woman suffered minor injuries and her bicycle was damaged. Charges are not being considered for the passenger who opened the door into the path of the oncoming bike. However, Saanich Police want to remind motorists to check their surroundings before opening a car door.
It’s also a bad idea to let passengers out at intersections, police say. Pull into a parking lot or to the side of the road where parking is allowed.
