Canary Derby raises quarter million
EDS Advanced Solutions left Mannie Olukotun and Chris Lum make last minute adjustments to their car Sunday at VI Tech Park before the start of the Canary Derby. The Canary Derby gives a chance for Vancouver Island companies to join forces with the Canary Foundation and BC Cancer Foundation to help support early detection cancer research within BC.

The results are in from last weekend's Canary Derby. The annual soapbox derby races, held in Saanich and Vancouver, raised close to a quarter of a million dollars for the B.C. Cancer Foundation. The Greater Victoria edition contributed $129,000 to the total as 13 teams took part. The fastest entry on the course, located next to the Vancouver Island Tech Park, was once again Schneider Electric, which also won last year's event.

In Victoria the Volunteer of the Year Perpetual Trophy was presented to Peter Beatty. Beatty, who passed away in March, spent a great deal of time last year building the starting ramps and helping his brother Walt Nicholson with the organizing and race course development. It was in his honour the Volunteer of the Year Perpetual Trophy was created.
The Canary Derby raises funds for the Canary Project at BC Cancer Foundation, focusing on early cancer detection. In 2008, the Victoria Canary Derby raised $140,000 and in its inaugural year Vancouver raised $110,000. More info www.canaryderby.com
