The Victoria Symphony has secured the services of one of its key individuals through 2013, renewing the contract of music director Tania Miller for another three years.
"I have grown very fond of the orchestra," Miller stated in a release. "It has so many wonderful and warm people and I am surrounded each day by extraordinary talent."
In the years accepted the post with the VSO in 2003 – she was the first woman music director for a major symphony in Canada – she has overseen many major projects. Included are the Beethoven Festival, three Mozart Festivals, the New Currents Festival of new music, and the Odyssey Series and Royal Tea Series.
She has also been a driving force behind many local educational initiatives, including the Young Musicians Concerto Showcase, the Rink Cycle concert with 1,000 Greater Victoria students, the addition of K-3 education concerts, and vsNEW, the program for young composers.
VSO board president Deedrie Ballard stated the extension of Miller's tenure with the orchestra "helps solidify our position as one of the most significant arts organizations in the province."
