There are a few benefits to living near one of Canada’s premier research institutions.
One of them is the steady stream of cultural events, public lectures and other happenings at the University of Victoria that open a window to the wider world.
On Monday, the 20th anniversary of the historic fall of the Berlin Wall will be marked with a film screening and discussion panel.
The film is director Jurgen Bottcher’s 1991 documentary The Wall. With no verbal commentary, the film presents the story of the wall’s collapse through raw film footage captured on both sides of the wall as it came down. The film screens at Cinecenta at 7:15 p.m. Monday Nov. 9. Following it, Derek Fraser, research associate with UVic’s Centre for Global Studies, Peter Liddell, professor emeritus from UVic’s Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies) and Erika Goetz-Lad will lead a panel discussion.
Kristallnacht remembered
The screening is one of two events to mark the date, which is an important double anniversary in German history. On the same day in 1938, 99 Jews were murdered on a night that became known as Kristallnacht. Thousands more were sent to concentration camps and hundreds of synagogues and Jewish businesses were looted and burned.
UVic history professor David Zimmerman will lead a Kristallnacht Commemoration, presented by the Victoria Holocaust Remembrance and Education Society, on Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Congregation Emanu-El, 1461 Blanshard Street.
