Back to School Bash will help finish Ugandan school

While students across the Capital Region ready for school on Tuesday, 350 children at the King’s Kids orphan home in Mityana, Uganda, are making do without one.

It’s nothing unusual for kids in Africa, except that a half-finished, five-classroom building built specifically for King’s Kids has sat on hold since a team from Saanich built it in May.

Saanich’s Lion of Judah church began the project and they want to finish it, said spokesperson Kelcy Snyckers.

To help the fundraising along, the church is holding a Back to School Bash family fun day on the grounds this Sunday (Sept. 6), from noon to 4 p.m. at 6021 West Saanich Rd.

“We are going to make it a huge bash. We thought it was ideal timing with (local) kids going back to school,” said Snyckers.

Everything is by donation as the food, drinks and games have all been donated from within the community.

Entertainment includes face painting, clowns (with balloons), music, inflatable games for kids and adults, including a gladiator contest, and a ride for the really little ones.

“Our whole link to (the King’s Kids school) is through Saanich,” Snyckers added.

The first $40,000 raised helped complete a foundation and walls for the school. The next target is an additional $30,000 to install a roof, floor and finishing touches.

Lion of Judah plans to send a team to finish building the school in January.
