Sailing: RVYC hosts nationals, Junior sailors without quarters
Juniors relax off Cattle Point Between races during RVYC's Sailwest Canadian chapmionships last summer.
With two junior sailing regattas coming up at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, one national and one international, billeted sleeping quarters are in high demand.
RVYC is hosting the Canadian Yachting Association Youth Sailing Championships from Aug. 1 to 6, and the Canadian Optimist Dinghy Championships Aug. 23 to 28.
The Canadian dinghy championships is a particularly large event. It features youth sailors aged nine to 14 from across Canada, the U.S.A., and internationally, all competing in the same event, the Optimist dinghy. Junior national regattas in Canada, U.S.A. and Mexico are intentionally scheduled within a few weeks of each other so junior teams can make the most of their tour by attending them all.
RVYC sailing program coordinator and head coach Steve McBride is hoping a few more billets will come forward as 120 athletes plus 120 accompanying parents and coaches are expected for each event.
"With teams from all the participating provinces looking for places to stay and the finite number of families from our racing team we can only put up so many teams," said McBride.
Because the University of Victoria dorms fill up with students in the latter half of August, RVYC is hoping for friendly Saanich and Oak Bay homes to open their doors for youth sailors for the five day period.
Canada's youth championships, (Aug. 1-6) features a number of fleets (types of boats) racing. Elite youths aged 18-and-under from across Canada sail Laser, Byte, Radial, 420, and 29er classes.
