The first week of November is Crime Prevention Week in B.C.

The Saanich police offered tips on the department’s website at www.saanichpolice.ca on how to better protect yourself.

A new topic was covered each day – from Internet safety to abuse of vulnerable adults – in hopes that the initiative, led by the B.C. Crime Prevention Association and the Ministry of Public Safety, will encourage crime prevention in the province.

"Our hope is that you'll learn something that'll help limit the prevalence of crime in our community," said Sgt. Julie Fast.

Crime prevention tips

Monday: Personal safety – Listen to your instincts and stay alert to your surroundings. If something feels wrong, if you feel uncomfortable, then act.

Tuesday: Internet safety – Keep an open line of communication with your children about what they're doing online. Be aware of the sites they're visiting, who they're connecting with, and the information they are posting.

Wednesday: Vulnerable adult abuse – Defining adult abuse doesn't just include physically assaulting someone. There are also sexual, emotional and financial forms of abuse. And there is help available in the community.

Thursday: Preventing fraud – Keep tabs on your banking. Get into the habit of following the path of your money so you can identify, really quickly, if something is wrong.

Friday: Dating and relationship violence – Having an intimate relationship with somebody does not raise the tolerance level for abuse. Violence and sexual assault with a partner is as unacceptable as it is against a stranger.
