Gardeners can spruce up their yards while helping impoverished children in Uganda this Sunday. The Jolly Nyeko Foundation is holding an auction on July 12 to fund the Jolly Children Academy in Uganda.
“It’s a garden-themed auction,” said Leanne Stokes, an organizer with the foundation. “So there is going to be an Adirondack chair, hand barrows, an obelisk, a handmade bird bath and original artwork.”
There will also be a landscape designer offering tips and tricks for creating a better garden.
People can drop off their old eyeglasses to Amanda Weinerman of the Cadboro Bay Optometry Clinic. Weinerman is heading to Uganda in January to check the eyesight of 500 children and seniors.
Jolly Nyeko is a Ugandan social worker who started a toll-free help line for children in Uganda 12 years ago. This blossomed into a non-governmental organization called Act for Children that has funded schools, micro-finance projects and 34 early-childhood development centres. It has also assisted victims of a brutal conflict that has plagued Uganda for more than 20 years.
“They have worked with girls who have been rescued, girls who have been taken as sex slaves and who needed rehabilitation. So Jolly herself has definitely been involved in that,” said Stokes.
The auction is at 3911 Hobbs St., from 1 to 4 pm. For more information, check out www.jnfcanada.org or call 250-721-0445.
