Despite the deja vous, Anne Van Bastelaere found her final frame at the Canadian National Lawn Bowling Championships exciting game.

The Sidney lawn bowler earned the silver medal when she dropped the final 21-18 to fellow BC representative Josephine Lee, a Lower Mainland bowler. To earn a place at nationals, both Van Bastelaere and Lee had to finish in the top two in provincial play earlier this year.

“I finished second against the same girl (Lee) who won the gold medal, and it was the same score,” Van Bastelaere said with a laugh.

“I’m sure we have the best players here in BC.”

“It was a real exciting game,” she said of the national final. “I was just thrilled to get into the gold medal round.”

Nationals were held in Juan de Fuca, which meant a plethora of her fellow Sidney Lawn Bowling Club members, as well as other BC lawn bowlers, could come out and offer support.

“They were sitting along the edge,” she said of the final game, where she and Lee played on an end green, offering up prime viewing. “People came from all the clubs around and were really supportive, it was awesome.”

During the closing ceremonies, of the Canadian National Lawn Bowling Championships held at Juan de Fuca, the then Bowls Canada president (now past president), Georgina

Bellamy, announced that the Sidney Lawn Bowling Club had the greatest percentage increase in membership of any lawn bowling club in Canada.
