Change with times
Homelessness and you.
Federal, provincial and municipal governments have all done a lot with various programs and shelters to help the homeless. I commend their efforts — but the problem persists.
I think each of us must realize that it is our personal responsibility to care for the one or two percent of the population who are addicted or physically or mentally ill. What we need is a paradigm shift in consciousness about the less fortunate among us.
It can happen. Fifty years ago, many people smoked. Not now. Twenty-five years ago, only a few radicals were concerned about the environment. Not now. Twenty years ago, laptop computers, cell phones, iPods and Blackberry-like devices were new. Not now.
The world changes at a dizzy pace but some things remain the same. We still have the same personal responsibilities to ourselves, our families and our communities. We all want clean water, quality food, safe streets, good schools and health care.
Our Place, Cool Aid, the food banks, Salvation Army, United Way: all could do so much more if they had adequate and reliable funding.
Decide now to recognize your own responsibility to society. Believe that you can make a difference. Review your personal budget. If you are able to contribute, do so now with a monthly pledge. Become an active, committed part of the solution.
