Heavy rain may have caused a fatal crash in Central Saanich last night, Thursday, Nov. 5.

An elderly woman, who's name is not being released by police at the request of family, died after it appears she crossed Mount Newton X Road near the Saanich Peninsula Hospital in poor weather.

"Preliminary investigation suggests that the victim had crossed a dark section of the road wearing muted clothing," said Const. Janis Jean, media liaison for the Central Saanich Police. "It was during a period of very heavy rain and visibility by the driver of the vehicle was limited."

The woman was quickly attended to by two off-duty paramedics, on their way home after shift at the nearby ambulance station. Central Saanich Police, fire and paramedics arrived quickly and the woman was transported to the nearby Saanich Peninsula Hospital. Unfortunately she succumbed to injuries not long after the accident.

Police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors and charges are not anticipated against the driver of the vehicle.

Police ask that any witnesses to the incident, in the 2100 block of Mount Newton X Road shortly after 6 p.m. on Nov. 5, contact Cpl. Dave Hodgson at 250-652-4441.
