After completing the largest campaign in the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation’s history, it is ready to ensure that the new operating rooms have the equipment they need to be fully functional.

“Our hospital is a gem and we’re so pleased to have the support of the community in our efforts to make this hospital the best community hospital possible,” said Board President Lorne Jack. “Now we are asking the community to help us with funds to equip the operating room. I’m very pleased to announce today that our long time donors have already contributed more than $170,000 to make this dream of a fully equipped operating room a reality.”

With the community’s help, the foundation raised $4 million to renovate and enlarge two existing operating rooms and to build a third new operating room.

Now the hospital needs two operating room tables ($75,000 each), one urology table ($325,000), two sets of operating room lights with cameras ($60,000), case carts ($6,000 each), anaesthetic carts ($3,000 each) and many smaller items.

“One set of OR lights was contributed by a donor who wished to see cameras included in the lights to give students a better view of surgery,” said Karen Morgan Executive Director Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation.

“The OR staff are absolutely thrilled that planning has begun for the new suite,” said Clinical Nurse Leader Barb Mollberg. “However, our new operating rooms will have to accommodate new, larger operating room tables and new equipment that is mounted in the ceiling, such as OR lights with cameras

embedded.”

In addition, the new operating rooms will have two access doors to prevent any cross-contamination. One door will lead into the OR from a central room, where sterilized and clean instruments and equipment are housed, while the second door into the OR allows for patients entering and leaving post operatively.

“What can we all do to leave our legacy?” asked Laurie Salvador, who along with her father John is honorary co-chair for the campaign. “To the foundation board and the staff and to those with spare change in their pockets, we encourage you to continue with your generosity so that we can accomplish that $1 million goal and provide the equipment that we need for this new operating theatre.

“We all know that government funding is a challenge in these times and that will probably never change. Without your financial support, we would not be privileged to have our own community hospital.”

“Laurie Salvador and her father John Salvador come to this position with a lot of experience and passion,” said Morgan. “John was a Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation board member in the 1990s and still helps out with the golf tournament. Laurie is a generous donor and supporter of the foundation’s events.”

Anyone wishing to contribute to the campaign can mail a cheque payable to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation, 2166 Mt. Newton X Road, Saanichton, BC V8M 2B2, or can call in their donation on their credit card to 250-652-7531. All donations are eligible for a tax receipt.
