Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre director Angus Matthews gave credit to Sidney residents as he passed on an award from Tourism Vancouver Island.

“Although the Ocean Discovery Centre’s name is on the award, I really think it belongs to the community,” said Matthews as he presented the award to Sidney Mayor Larry Cross.

This year, the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre was the recipient of Tourism Vancouver Island’s Raising the Bar Award. The Raising the Bar Award recognizes a business or organization that has developed or renewed a tourism product or package that captures the attention of travellers and thus increases the desirability of the Vancouver Island region as a destination

Each year Tourism Vancouver Island recognizes businesses and individuals for their contribution in positioning the Vancouver Island region as a premier tourism destination. This year’s awards ceremony was held Sept 23 during the annual conference and AGM.

Five awards are given for tourism-industry stakeholders within the Vancouver Island, Victoria and Gulf Islands region.
