Give time to honour trustee
Brian Robinson in Gulf View Park.
Three hours of fun and toiling at Gulf View Park will honour Marika Townshend.
“One of the last correspondence she wrote before she passed away was she was concerned about the ever-increasing invasive species showing up in our area,” said Brian Robinson, parks superintendent for North Saanich.
Through the Adopt-A-Park program, the District of North Saanich will hold an event to honour the North Saanich school trustee and dedicated member of the community who died April 23 this year after a battle with cancer.
“For a small municipality it’s difficult to deal with it when you’re weighing things,” Robinson said. The district does like to foster community liaison’s however.
“The parks commission thought it was a good opportunity to look at a park that was in her neighbourhood, and engage the community in a little bit of stewardship,” Robinson explained.
The district and the parks commission are inviting residents to volunteer up to three hours of time to help remove broom, ivy and other invasive plants from Gulf View Park.
“Gulf View is a nice small little park. With three hours we can definitely make a difference in that small park,” Robinson said. The park was chosen because Townshend lived in the area.
The work party is slated for Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. until noon in Gulf View Park in the 8700 block of East Saanich Road. For more information contact Brian Robinson, works superintendent at 250-655-5481 or brobinson@northsaanich.ca.
