Seniors need flu shots

Seniors may be least likely to catch H1N1, but they can still come down with seasonal flu and should be vaccinated, the region's top public health doctor says.

"Historically, this group has accounted for about half the immunizations provided by our public health staff," said Dr. Richard Stanwick, chief medical health officer for the Vancouver Island Health Authority. "Our aim this year is to complete this initial phase of immunization clinics within four weeks."

Seasonal flu shot clinics began yesterday (Oct. 13) at health units across the region.

The seasonal vaccine will not be available to anyone other than seniors and long-term care residents until after the H1N1 vaccination program is complete. The H1N1 vaccine is expected to be available in mid-November.

For days and times of seasonal flu clinics at the Saanich Peninsula Health Unit go to www.viha.ca/flu.
