Central Saanich Fire Department assistant fire chief Forrest Owens said it was a fire he thought he’d never see in Central Saanich. “It was our first train fire.”

The train was located at Heritage Acres and luckily it is visible from the highway. “A passer by on the highway noticed the smoke and called it in,” said Owens.

The fire call came just before 7 p.m. Oct. 5 and three trucks raced out to the scene. “It was a smouldering fire in the walls, there was lots of smoke, but the train is salvageable,” he said.

The train was undergoing some work during the day it caught fire, and although Owens had not finished his investigation before Peninsula News Review press time, he said he did not believe it to be suspicious.
