Run for the Cure raises half million
Four thousand pairs of runners hit the track around the University of Victoria Sunday to raise money for breast cancer research.
Through pledges, participants raised $500,697 to run or walk a five- or one-kilometre circuit around the campus.
The money will be used to fund initiatives in prevention, early detection, treatment and other health-care related issues. All but five per cent of the funds raised will stay in B.C. and the Yukon.
Last year, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure attracted an extra 776 people and raised an extra $130,806.
"Our numbers were down compared to last year, but ... I think of the people there, there was a higher commitment and a higher enthusiasm ... It was a very positive day," said Tracy Ryan, manager of the Foundation's Vancouver Island chapter.
Carla Davies, a breast cancer survivor, was a highlight of the day, Ryan said.
She inspired the crowd with the tale of her own experiences and how she connected with the Cowichan Dragon Divas, a team of dragon boat racers committed to the cause.
Unbeknownst to Davies, her two pink-clad granddaughters stood behind her as she spoke about how the disease affected her family.
"It was quite emotional," said Ryan, of the moment the two surprised their grandma with a bouquet of flowers.
Nationally, Run for the Cure raised $26.5 million this year at 56 run sites. The total raised is down $2 million from last year.
It's not too late, however, to make a donation.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and donations can be made until the end of the month. For more information, visit www.cbcf.org.
