Victoria is taking part in a community-wide fire drill and fire prevention officer, Debbie Turner hopes everyone will put down what they’re doing and file out en masse, Oct. 7.

“Do it in your home, do it in your neighbourhood, organize a barbecue after,” she said.

There were 173 structure fires in in the CRD last year and six people died due to fires in their homes.

“People are still not thinking of two ways to get out of a home,” she said. “We’re still losing people because they get trapped.”

So far this year, there have been 95 house fires and seven injuries in the CRD, but no fatalities.

Fire prevention week Oct. 4 to 10 is a good reminder to test your smoke, alarm but when it goes off for real, it shouldn’t be the first time you test your plan.

The community fire drill will happen at 6:30 p.m., Oct. 7. For more information and to download an escape grid, visit www.fpoa.bc.ca.
