Strike up the bandstand

Musicians have a new place to play in Beacon Park.

The new pavilion was officially opened this week with help from special guest Lieutenant Governor Steven Point.

Point, MLA Murray Coell, MP Gary Lunn, Community Arts Council of Saanich Peninsula president Dianne Cross, Peninsula Celebrations member Susan Gurney and Sidney mayor and council were escorted into the park by the 443 Squadron pipes and drums. The ceremony began with a First Nations blessing and a welcome from Town Crier Bert Stevens.

“This park has had a long history as a gathering place for our town,” said Sidney Mayor Larry Cross in his remarks. “Again we are welcoming back the musical events which existed prior to the construction of the hotel and the expansion of the park. We are extremely pleased this is happening this year.”

“Someone once asked me ‘what is a community?’” said Point. “[They are] not strangers passing each other in the streets, rather, they are committed, involved people who are connected by a common history and a shared love of a particular town or place.

“People get connected through community activities at centres like this one. We create a sense of togetherness by sharing time together at community events.

“I know it cost a great deal of money to build this magnificent structure … as this facility becomes used … its true value will emerge … we have the capacity to create a sense of community, a sense of togetherness by coming together at this very centre.

“I’m sure Sydney, Australia is going to be envious,” he joked.

The ceremony included the dedication of a plaque to community volunteer Joan Ballenger, who died in 2005.

“Joan Ballenger was a mentor. She accumulated people and showed them how to volunteer, always leading by example,” said Susan Gurney. “I am so very proud to say that I am one of those people who Joan took from sitting in the wings of our community and made me get involved. More importantly, she made me want to be involved by showing me what fun it is and what satisfaction can be gained by being an active participant in the community.

“The festive and cultural life of Sidney and the Saanich Peninsula has been enhanced forever by Joan Ballenger, and it’s only fitting that we honour her today.”

Dianne Cross, made an announcement of another new addition to Beacon Park.

Sooke artist Jake James was selected to place two steel, life sized sculptures in Beacon Park this fall. (See the related story on page 18).

Along with the official ribbon cutting for the “Sidney Opera House” as it has become known, the Lieutenant Governor presented mayor Cross with a chain of office. The money for the ceremonial chain which is worn for ceremonial events was raised by individuals in the community.

The Sidney Concert Band then took to the stage and entertained the crowd.
