Lane picks up Red Dog prize

Patrick Lane’s novel Red Dog, Red Dog won the $5,000 City of Victoria Butler Book Prize this week.

Known mostly as a poet, Lane turned to prose in the last 10 years. Published by McLelland, his novel set in the 1950s B.C. Interior looks at one hard-living family and their complicated loyalties.

Winners were announced at a gala hosted by CBC’s Hal Wake at the Union Club. Of the 49 books that were read for the Butler prize, four other finalists included Patricia Young, Ilana Stanger-Ross, David Leach and Dede Crane.
