Some 75 Sidney and North Saanich children with chronic medical conditions will soon be a little bit safer after a $7,500 donation from the Sidney Lions to the No Child Without program of the Medic Alert Foundation of Canada.

The No Child Without program provides medical information bracelets to students with allergies, diabetes, asthma and other persistent health issues, allowing for fast, informed treatment — and immediate parental notification — in the event of an emergency.

The contribution will cover the $100 cost of protecting a child to age 14 for the estimated five per cent of Sidney and North Saanich’s approximately 1,500 children with chronic health conditions.

The Sidney Lions raise money through various programs including the Lions’ lunch box wagon which appears at numerous public functions.

Other programs funded through the lunch box include playground equipment, providing glasses for local children, Habitat for Humanity and other Sidney Lions endeavours.

Lions Club Canada is supporting the No Child Without project nationally, and it is believed that the Sidney Lions’ donation is the first on the local level.
