The James Island barge usually looks like a sea monster, as in this picture, but those familiar with that face will find it under wraps this season, as the barge will be kitted out as Santa’s sleigh for the Sailpast and in order to collect donations for the food bank.

Sea monster dresses up as sleigh

Last year, the sea monster floated away with the ‘Best Commercial Boat’ award in the 2007 Sidney Sailpast, and ever since, the crew at James Island have been looking forward to dressing their barge up for the 2008 event, which takes place Saturday, November 29, starting at 6:15 p.m.

The barge, which the Islanders call the sea monster, is permanently decorated with painted scales and other colourful appendages which give it the appearance of a dragon or creature of the sea. During last year’s Sailpast the lights made the creature appear to chug forward with a toothy mouth gaping open.

This year, however, the sea monster will be covering up with some festive flair, as it is temporarily revamped as Santa’s sleigh.

Watching for the barge at the Sailpast isn’t the only way to visit with the sleigh, however. The barge will be parked at the Tulista boat ramp on Saturday, November 29, and Sunday, November 30, from 1 to 3 p.m., in order to collect donations for the Sidney Lions Food Bank. Those from James Island invite Peninsula residents to come along and fill Santa’s sleigh with non-perishable food items, which will go to help those in the community in need to enjoy a happy holiday season.
