Coffee, a good way to give

Fresh Cup, Peninsula News Review pair up for a Christmas cause

Many of us share the childhood memory of the rush of excitement when we first awakened on Christmas morning. The excitement of knowing something magical had happened during the night. But what if you didn’t have this wonderful seasonal feeling each year during your childhood? What if you never had the memory of racing downstairs ahead of your brothers or sisters to get the first glance at a Christmas tree that had presents spilling out from under it, or a stocking that was bursting at the seams? Childhood would be a little less memorable for us all.

In support of great childhood memories, the Peninsula News Review continues to promote our Coins for Kids fundraising program in hopes that we can make sure each and every child can experience this positive aspect of the holiday season. The money raised through the Coins for Kids campaign goes to the Kiwanis Club of Sidney and the Peninsula, who buy gifts for children who would otherwise go without.

The Peninsula News Review works with many local businesses each year to raise money for this worthwhile cause and is proud to announce the addition of a new and flavourful way to join our Coins for Kids campaign.

Fresh Cup Roastery Café in Sidney and Saanichton will be donating $1 of every pound of Freshly Roasted Organic Coffee sold through their two stores this December to our Coins for Kids program.

Fresh Cup Roastery Café is entering its tenth year of roasting coffee here on the Saanich Peninsula, and is an avid supporter of community events. “We feel that coffee is a great way for local groups to raise much needed money,” said Jim Townley, president of Fresh Cup. “With so many people drinking coffee, it becomes a renewable fundraising opportunity.”

“I frequently buy coffee as a gift,” said Peninsula News Review editor Laura Lavin. “With Fresh Cup donating a portion of their proceeds to our Coins For Kids program, it’s nice to know a gift I give to my friends or relatives will also help local families.”

Fresh Cup roasts their farmer- friendly, certified organic coffees every couple of days, using their patented roasting technology. “Coffee stales just like fresh bread does,” said Townley.

Fresh Cup’s roast master is Jim’s father Mel Townley who keeps his eye on the freshness, consistency and blends in the two locations. “Our Christmas Blend is always very popular,” said Mel. “Fresh coffee is not a lot more expensive than the coffee you buy at the grocery store in comparison. Not only is the certified organic aspect important, the taste value is much better as people tend to add less cream and sugar to their coffee.”

Staff at the Peninsula News Review hope that you support our Coins for Kids fundraiser this holiday season to help raise money for much needed gifts for Peninsula children.

Fresh Cup Roastery Café is located in Saanichton at 104-1931 Mount Newton X Road, and in Sidney at 103-2360 Beacon Avenue.
